St. Jakob Parish Church Purkersdorf

Highlight • Religious Site

Parish of St. Jakob
Purkersdorf has existed for 870 years; The first traces of church activity appeared in this place around 700 years ago. In the 13th century our parish was separated from the former mother parish of Sieghartskirchen. Since its founding, the parish and church have been under the patronage of the Purkersdorf manor. In 1333, the Purkersdorf parish became the patron church and patron parish of the Habsburgs. Our parish church, dedicated to St. James, was destroyed by the Turks in 1529 and 1683. The church burned in 1805 and 1842. In 1935 an extension was built. The ceremonial consecration of the expanded church took place on July 12, 1936. Since 1727 the church has also been a pilgrimage church with the miraculous image “Comforter of the Afflicted”. The rectory was also destroyed several times; The current building has existed since 1782. A separate parish hall was built in 1976; Parish events take place there.
