Thallern Estate

Highlight • Restaurant

I like it very much - quiet and comfortable, well laid out in the vineyards - a visit with a guide is worthwhile in any case - Lower Austria Card is accepted.

Mühlbacher Venice is a cycling highlight in Wiener Neudorf, Mödling. It's a short stretch that's a bit reminiscent of Venice, with a canal populated by lots of ducks. It is a very beautiful and not overcrowded section of the Mödlingbach cycle path, which is easy to ride in both summer and winter. There are many bike tours that lead to this highlight, for example from Am Schöpfwerk or from Alterlaa. If you like cycling, you should not miss this highlight. 😊

There are several bridges over the Mödlingbach that you can cross by bike. One of these is the wooden bridge near Biedermannsdorf, which is part of the Mödlingbach cycle route.

Another is the bridge at the mouth of the Triesting-Schwechat cycle path, which you can reach on a circular tour from Wiener Neudorf. A third is the bridge at Laxenburg Castle, which is a popular excursion destination.

For decades, the former Georg Winiwarter tin and lead factory, located directly on the thermal spa cycle path in Gumpoldskirchen, was a classic lost place. The industrial ruins, whose outlines were reflected in the Wiener Neustadt Canal, are a popular photo subject.

On the history of the old tin and lead factory
The factory was built by Georg Ritter von Winiwarter, born in 1822 in Ukraine (Lviv). He was an engineer and industrialist.
In 1851, he founded the Georg Winiwarter tin and lead factory in Gumpoldskirchen with his brother Joseph Max and the chemist H. R. Gersheim. The factory was intended to produce percussion fuses and galvanized sheet iron based on a patent by Gersheim. Lead products were also manufactured from 1857 onwards. From 1865 onwards, after the departure of his co-founders, he ran the company alone. He produced corrugated iron, boiler systems, and stoves. As early as 1858, he recruited Johann Baptist Ulrich from a German wire drawing company, who gradually took over management over the years, especially when Winiwarter had to retire for health reasons. At the 1862 World Exhibition in London, the factory equipped a fireproof and burglar-proof office (Comptoir) made of galvanized sheet iron. In 1890, Winiwarter finally sold the company entirely to Ulrich.

The factory was apparently shut down in 1976. However, contemporary witnesses report school trips in the 1990s when blast furnaces were still being worked on there.
