Enns Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

Anyone who crosses this bridge enters "ground" steeped in history. After 1945, this bridge was the border between the Russian and US-American zones of occupation and one of the most heavily guarded spots in Austria after 1945.

Mitterwasser

Highlight • River

The Mitterwasser is a former right tributary of the Danube in the Linzer Feld near Ebelsberg and Enns, which used to be navigable. It was cut off from the watercourse by the Traun-und-Danube regulation and has partially silted up.

Wiener Graben Quarry, Mauthausen Memorial

Highlight • Historical Site

I don't know - a cyclist in front of the Stairs of Death (photo by Martin T.) - ridden or pushed - it doesn't matter - a bicycle has no place in a place like this!!!
Here, where so many people have lost their lives... - I would never push a bicycle across a cemetery either.
The quarry is a place of remembrance and devotion that deserves to be treated with respect.

This quarry is easily accessible by bike without having to climb the steep incline to the Mauthausen concentration camp. From here, you can climb the Stairs of Death on foot. Unfortunately, access to the Stairs is now (June 2021) blocked off with a gate due to a lack of "modern safety standards." A rather strange argument for a place where people were deliberately put to death.

Fortunately, you can easily bypass the gate and climb the stairs in peace and with thoughts of the many murdered here.

I consider this place particularly suitable for thoughtful remembrance.

On April 7, 2022, a group of people climbed the Stairs of Death to the concentration camp. They were on the Jerusalem Way (jerusalemway.org) as peace pilgrims from Linz to Vienna, traveling in solidarity with the people of Ukraine.
