Monument to the Fallen

Highlight • Monument

The memorial for the fallen and as a tribute to the veterans used to stand next to the old town hall (= protected front building of GC Den Bussel). The memorial was moved around the turn of the century and now stands next to the tower of the old St. Michael's Church.

Sint-Michiel Tower

Highlight • Monument

The tower of the old St. Michael's Church looks a bit strange on the square with its white buildings. The disappeared church was a sober classicist building with three naves of four bays under one gable roof and a three-sided choir. The built-in west tower dates from 1764. It was built in brick; the cornerstones and the base are made of sandstone. The monument was restored and equipped with four illuminated hands. The bells are operated from the new church.

Saint Michael's Church

Highlight • Religious Site

The current St. Michael's Church is a modern hall church, the foundation stone of which was blessed on October 12, 1968. The Brussels architects Desmedt and Lateir designed a spacious prayer area with 750 seats. The interior is sober. Glass areas provide soft light. This St. Michael's Church was put into use in March 1970. The dragon slayer Saint Michael is omnipresent here: against the outer facade we see him in an aluminum sculpture by artisan-sculptor Willy Ceysens. The baptismal font, the reading room with the image of Saint Michael and the god's lamp are by artist Willy Cleyssens. We also see Michiel in an image behind glass.

At the front is the beautiful organ that was made around 1777 by the renowned organ builder Pieter Van

Peteghem. The organ in Keerbergen has a graceful, typical rococo case made of oak. The organ was originally built as a balustrade organ; the cupboard was built into the balustrade of the rood loft. The fact that we can still admire this organ is the result of alert people from the local historical community. They managed to save the work of art from destruction during the demolition works of the old church in 1970-1972. Before we leave the church, we look at the Way of the Cross by Gust Dierickx. In fifteen painted panels we see the fourteen stations of the Way of the Cross and the resurrection of Christ.

Dijle Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

The Dyle Bridge between Keerbergen and Haacht was named Wittegoud Bridge, referring to the asparagus and chicory that are grown here.

Dijle River

Highlight • River

The Dyle (French: Dyle, Walloon: Tîle) is a Brabant river that flows through the Belgian provinces of Walloon Brabant, Flemish Brabant and Antwerp. It is part of the Scheldt basin. The area east of Brussels, through which the Dyle flows, is called the Dijleland.
The most important places on the Dyle are, downstream, Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve, Waver, Leuven, Werchter and Mechelen. The river is 86 kilometres long.
This river rises in Houtain-le-Val, a sub-municipality of Genappe in Walloon Brabant. Initially, the Dyle flows fairly freely in a northeasterly direction. South of Leuven, the Thyle, the Train, the Nethen, the Laan and the IJse flow into the Dyle; in Leuven itself, the Voer as well. In Werchter the Demer flows into the Dijle, which then makes a bend to the west. In Mechelen the Dijle is split into an Inner Dijle and an Afleidingsdijle. Finally, just after the Zenne flows into its course, the Dijle merges with the Nete into the Rupel in Rumst.
