Castle Garden and Herb Garden

Highlight • Historical Site

A very beautiful piece of nature with history, after all it is the castle garden of Castle Rhoon. And is part of a beautiful natural walking area around the castle. For me personally a great training round on an early morning at the weekend.

Village Church Poortugaal

Highlight • Religious Site

The Dutch Reformed Church on Groene Kruisweg is the oldest building in Poortugaal. The church in its present form was built in the fifteenth century. It is an old gothic cruciform church ¹.

Like all churches in the Middle Ages, this church was also built in the east-west direction. The priest thus stood at the altar with his face to the east.
It is striking that the church of Poortugaal is not located in the center of the village. At the end of the 12th century, the island of IJsselmonde was an area that regularly flooded during high water. De Heer van Putten then starts building dikes. He takes possession of the area with the dikes. Around 1200 he built a wooden house as the administrative center of the polder and a wooden church, the "court church" of the Lord van Putten.
The wooden house is replaced around 1210 by a stone house on a motte (a raised hill). This house was not well founded and was quickly demolished. A few kilometers away, the Lord of Putten built castle “Valckesteyn” around 1310. The church remains lonely in the landscape.
