The Hanover region decided to build the "Scharnhorst Bridge" because simply renovating the structure would not have been possible given the extent of the damage that had occurred. The bridge, built in 1907 and last renovated in 1960, was no longer stable. Their navigability had to be limited to one lane. The new Leinebrücke uses the still usable pillar foundations of its predecessor, on which a new prestressed concrete superstructure is now enthroned. This not only preserved the old spans: by resuming the slight arch shape, the building blends harmoniously into the landscape again. The reliefs of Kaiser Wilhelm II, his wife Auguste Victoria and the namesake – the army reformer Gerhard Johann David von Scharnhorst who was born in Bordenau – that were removed during the 1960s renovation also returned to their historical place. Paula Windmill

Highlight • Monument

Paula is a Dutch mill, which was built in 1863 in Broitzem (now Braunschweig) and since 1912 in Steinhude. It replaced an old 1670 wind turbine at this location, which was destroyed by a lightning strike in 1911.

Barn Quarter Steinhude

Highlight • Historical Site

The Steinhuder Scheunenviertel comprises 13 listed half-timbered barns. In the past, grain, hay, and straw were stored here; today, the barns house the Toy Museum and many interesting exhibitions and events can be visited.

In two huge trough bridges, the ships cross the line on the Mittelland Canal. The Leine-Heide cycle path leads directly under the trough bridges.

Once under the MLK. Here the Mittelland Canal runs in a steel bed over the connection between Garbsen and Seelze. It's an interesting feeling to listen to the ships stomping over you. But there is something else that makes this trough bridge special. There are very special acoustics underneath. You can test this on a small scale, like we did with a 5-person choir, but real musicians also use these acoustics and like to meet during the international music festival, the 'MuSe'.
During the wet season, however, this place often belongs to the Leine, which floods the fields of the Garbsener Masch with the spring floods.
