Former Town Hall, Peer

Highlight • Historical Site

Former town hall, aldermen's bench, clerk's office, cloth hall, covered market, prison and fire engine house.
The building forms a crucial historical link between the triangular Markt, Kerkstraat and Nieuwstraat. In the ancien régime, the cloth hall and covered market were on the open ground floor, the meeting room for the city magistracy and the aldermen's chamber with its registry on the upper floor. The attic was rented out, usually in different parts, for a variety of purposes, usually to dry products such as hops and malt. Between the pillars on the ground floor was an open cobbled space, where the annual proceedings took place and the people gathered for various proclamations, insofar as these did not take place in the church or in the cemetery. The prisoners were locked up in the cellars.

The chapel of Our Lady on the Stake of 1833 is located in a beautiful area with lots of recreation and on the path of walks in the Valley of the Zwarte Beek. The chapel played the role of a church for a while, especially at the end of 1834 when the church of Koersel, where the chapel is located, was destroyed. The origin of the chapel, which quickly became a place of pilgrimage, dates back to 1826. In 1939, the chapel was expanded to the size it has today. You will find the entire origin story on site. In addition to the chapel, there is also a Marian Park with scenes of the Seven Sorrows of Our Lady and a Calvary. That park dates from 1910-1911 and was renovated in the 1950s.

Visitor Center De Watersnip

Highlight • Rest Area

The visitor center is the perfect starting point for cycling and hiking tours in the area, which is particularly beautiful due to the alternation of hay meadows, pastures and forests. The prickle pad, for example, offers a unique experience of nature and is also suitable for people with a handicap.

You can take a break and get something to eat in the visitor center cafeteria.

The Zwarte Beeks valley is a picturesque nature reserve with more than 1,500 hectares of beautiful nature. In Hechtel-Eksel the Zwarte Beek (i.e. the Black Stream) flows through low-lying meadows. As with most Kempen streams, there is no real source here either, but the watercourse is created by the confluence of several ditches.

What a beautiful place. with a very nice cycle path. Here you cycle past a military training area. They can close the cycle path, but then you can take the parallel road. If you continue to follow this cycle path you will arrive in beautiful surroundings with a very nice asphalted cycle path that meanders through the forest.

Rest area on the F74 cycle highway

Highlight • Rest Area

Large old hall, beautifully designed as a break area with lots of information about the region.
Unfortunately, I found no information about the hall and its former function. It definitely has something to do with the old railway line.
Unfortunately, only a short stretch of the F74 cycle highway is well developed and wide.
