Venchieredo Fountain
"Between Cordovado and Venchieredo, one mile between the two towns, there is a large and clear fountain that also has the voice of containing many cooling and healthy qualities in its water. But the nymph of the fountain did not believe that she only trusted the virtues of water to lure the devotees and surrounded herself with such a beautiful horizon of meadows, woods and sky, and with such a hospitable shade of alders and willows that it is in truth a recess worthy of Virgil's brush this where she liked to place her room.
Hidden and meandering paths, the whisper of rivulets, sweet and mossy slopes, nothing is missing all around. It is precisely the mirror of a sorceress, that clear blue water that, gushing insensibly from a bottom of tiny gravel, rose to double in her womb the image of such a picturesque and pastoral scene.
They are places that make one think of the inhabitants of Eden before sin; and they also make us think without disgust about sin now that we are no longer inhabitants of Eden.
There, therefore, around that fountain, the vague girls of Cordovado, Venchieredo and even Teglio, Fratta, Morsano, Cintello and Bagnarola, and other nearby villages, have used to gather on festive evenings since time immemorial. And they stay there for a long time in songs in laughter in conversations in snacks until the mother, the lover and the moon lead them back home. I Molini di Stalis sono un complesso di mulini recentemente restaurati grazie ad un intervento di recupero promosso dal Comune di Gruaro e dalle Province di Venezia e Pordenone. Sono collocati sugli argini e su un’isola in mezzo al fiume Lemene, nei pressi di un antico guado.
I Molini di Stalis, che sorgono esattamente sul confine tra il Friuli Venezia Giulia e il Veneto, lungo il corso del fiume Lemene, hanno una storia che è strettamente legata a quella della vicina Abbazia di Santa Maria di Sesto. La data fondamentale per questa località è il 1182, quando Papa Lucio III promulgò una Bolla con cui estendeva la protezione papale sui benedettini di Sesto e confermava i privilegi dell’antica Abbazia. In questo documento vengono citate anche Vincaretum cum curte e Staules cum curte.
Ma che cos’era una curtis? Indicava un’organizzazione di persone e mezzi con una determinata funzione economica. Nel nostro caso l’etimologia del termine Stalis – che significa, evidentemente “stalla” – ci aiuta a comprendere che vi erano dei ricoveri per animali nell’ambito di una proprietà più vasta. La signoria dell’Abbazia su Stalis venne poi confermata da Papa Gregorio IX nel 1236 e poi da una sentenza favorevole all’Abate Ermanno del 1298.
Come vedete, fino a questo punto i documenti non parlano di alcun mulino, che è la principale caratteristica funzionale e paesaggistica di questo bel luogo.
I primi documenti che attestano con certezza l’esistenza dei Molini risalgono al 1432, quando lo stato patriarcale era già stato inglobato all’interno della Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia e Abate di Sesto era Tommaso de’ Savioli, ultimo tra gli abati residenziali. Altri documenti che interessano Stalis risalgono:
- al 1522, ed attestano l’obbligo degli abitanti di Bagnara (frazione dell’odierno comune di Gruaro) ad andare a macinare i propri grani a Stalis;
- al 1583, e consistono in un contratto di affitto per sette anni del mulino, comprese stalle, sega, mole, macioli e peschiera;
- al 1656, e si tratta di una rilevazione annonaria che fotografa, a Stalis, la presenza di 21 uomini, 15 donne, 6 bimbi e 8 bimbe, per un totale di 50 persone;
- al 1688, quando compaiono due famiglie legate alla storia successiva del mulino: i portogruaresi Tasca come proprietari e i Brussolo come mugnai.
L’ultimo fondamentale documento che conclude la storia più risalente del sito è il Catasto Napoleonico, quando i Molini vennero aggregati al territorio del Comune di Gruaro, e quindi definitivamente separati da Venchiaredo.
Nell’800 e nel ’900 l’agricoltura, e, quindi, il paesaggio subiscono rilevanti trasformazioni: l’arte molitoria subisce un irreversibile declino.
Del 1810 è la descrizione nel citato catasto napoleonico, che attesta la presenza di un mulino a quattro ruote, fronteggiato, sul lato destro del fiume, da una casa, un filatoio e una sega. Nel 1839, in base ad un rilievo austriaco, il mulino compare diviso in due parti: un mulino da grano ad acqua e un mulino da grano con pila da orzo. Sull’argine destro troviamo due case coloniche e una sega da legname ad acqua.
A grandi passi ci affacciamo nel pieno ’900, quando l’attività lavorativa è proseguita ininterrotta fino all’inizio della II Guerra Mondiale. Al termine del conflitto i mulini ripresero l’attività macinando prevalentemente mais.
Il mulino sull’isola funzionò fino al 1960 circa.
