Luino lakefront

Highlight • Lake

There is a sunny atmosphere in Luino - a city considered the most important center on the Lombard side of Lake Maggiore. In a wide plain at the outlet of the Valtravaglia at home, this cultural stronghold unites Mediterranean ambience with elegant splendor. Life pulsates in the industrial, commercial and tourist center, known beyond the city limits for its large international train station.

Oratory of Saints Joseph and Dionysius

Highlight • Religious Site

Oratorio the SS. Giuseppe e Dionigi, Luino
Oratorio by SS. Joseph and Dionysius
It was built as a private oratory attached to the palace of the owners of the fiefdom of Luino and Quattro Valli, held since the end of the sixteenth century by the Marliani family of Milan (the palace, then Crivelli, is now the seat of the town hall of Luino). Ruggero Marliani hired the cathedral factory's chief architect, Gerolamo Quadrio, a designer who was very active in the Lombardy area, in Milan in the mid-'600s. The work was completed in 1666, as evidenced by the memorial plaque above the entrance portal. The internal spatial system, based on an elongated octagon, repeats and updates the models developed by Giovanni Maria Richini in Milan at the beginning of this century. What is unusual is the high pronaos on the facade, which rises from the row of buildings facing the lake now and then: this was in the long term the symbol of the village, as numerous views and descriptions from travelers (mainly English) prove. Inside you can admire the high altar, certainly designed by the Quadrio, with a beautiful canvas (Sponsali di Giuseppe e Maria) praised at the time by the Milanese Cardinal Giuseppe Pozzobonelli during a pastoral visit to Luino in 1748. The side altars are an impressive work of walnut and were erected around the middle of the eighteenth century. They in turn contain valuable paintings dedicated to saints and Franciscan episodes; Unique painted leather fronts.
The Marliani family, one of the most important in Milan, could refer to a circle of artists of the first and highest levels. So he did not miss the passage from Milan by one of the main authors of the seventeenth century in northern Italy and Europe, the Jesuit Andrea Pozzo, also known to students for the illusionistic ceiling that he frescoed in Rome in the church of S. Ignazio. They therefore commissioned a complex canvas that, now being restored, has revealed, if not the original image quality (lost due to poor conservation of the work, long relegated to an attic), at least some details of the scene depicted illuminate. It is about the miraculous resurrection of Saint Dionysius, one of the first and legendary bishops of Milan, whose body, as a sign of continuity, embraces the figure of Saint Ambrose, who followed in his footsteps a few centuries later on the Ambrosian see. All artfully packaged to increase family fame. The Marliani indeed boasted descent from St. Dionysius. Hence the joint dedication of the oratory and the image of the bishop in the beautiful statue that guards the entrance to the church alongside that of St. Joseph.
Curiosity. To the right of the main altar, above a finely carved and gilded choir (another, as a pulpit, is on the opposite side), stands the organ from 1683; The instrument was restored to perfect condition by restoring the pipes thanks to the discovery of the somore (the supporting surface of the pipes) during the restoration of the building in the eighties of the twentieth century. Among the town's oldest organs, the instrument is regularly used for concerts.
