"In 1616 the Venetians tore down the old wooden bridge. In 1750 the old stone Napoleon Bridge was built with just one arch. Napoleon's troops marched on the bridge towards Predel, hence the name.

During the First World War, this bridge was blown up by the Austrian army, later the Italians built a wooden bridge and then an iron bridge followed. During the Second World War, the partisans defended the Republic of Kobarid here. Two commemorative plaques are erected on the bridge to commemorate these events."

Napoleon Bridge over the Soča Gorge

This extremely photogenic bridge crosses the Soča near Kobarid over a narrow rocky channel. The transition at this point has always been important. Only a few places along the raging river offered the opportunity to build a bridge.

In 1758/1759 the old wooden structure was replaced by a stone arch bridge. At that time there were Napoleonic troops in the region, which is how the building got its famous name.

However, none of the French were involved in the construction. The bridge was blown up during the Isonzo battles in World War I and was only rebuilt after the war.
