Ulicotensebaan gravel section

Highlight • Cycleway

This gravel strip already starts in Alphen, a bit hidden behind the houses and continues all the way through the Hooispoor to eventually arrive at the concrete slabs of the Ulicotensebaan. Nice undiscovered piece of gravel/sand.

This "cycle path" becomes a MTB track in the woods, I do not recommend this with a normal tour bike.
Previously you could cycle around the forest but this has now become private and closed.

Ring Ditches of Alphen

Highlight • Historical Site

This burial mound was located by means of an aerial photograph. Research took place in the severe winter of 1961-1962. It turned out that this ring-wall burial mound - together with the one in Hoogeloon - is the largest in the Netherlands! After the research, it was restored and can be visited freely. The easiest way to find it is via Kwaalburg.
The mound has a diameter of about 25 meters. It is surrounded by a ditch of about 1.5 meters, then a 3.5 meter wide rampart and around that another ditch of about 3 meters. The cremation remains and a bronze heel axe of undoubtedly an important person were buried here more than 3500 years ago.

There were probably several burial mounds here, because the area here was traditionally called the 'Zevenbergen'.
The burial mound was renovated in 1982.

This part is best done with a touring bike. Sometimes some loose sand.
