St. Peter's Church Kortessem

Highlight • Religious Site

The Sint-Pieterskerk is the parish church of Kortessem and is located at Kerkplein No. 1.
Story
A church was first mentioned in the 11th century. A Romanesque nave was built between 1026 and 1038. The Romanesque west tower dates from the second half of the 12th century. An early Gothic choir and transept were added in 1270-1272.
In 1225 the church became a collegiate church.
The church has suffered a lot of violence. In 1468 it was sacked by the troops of Charles the Bold. In 1490 it was set on fire by the gangs of Jehannot-le-Bâtard. William of Orange's troops also caused destruction in 1568. Looting also occurred later, including by French troops.
The restoration took place in 1870-1875 under the direction of Herman Jaminé, during which the side aisles were enlarged in the neo-Romanesque style using old materials.

Printhagen Castle

Highlight • Castle

The Printhagen family, which comes from the lordship of the castle and castle farm Printhagen, provided quite a few religious people over time. As a lordship, it had its own feudal court, a tax court and its own court of aldermen. Truiens Nieuws also devoted a nice article to it on truiensnieuws.be/retro/printhagen-in-kortessem-geklasseerd-bewoond-en-gerestaureerd following the restoration

The castle is privately owned and unfortunately not accessible. The small free lordship in the complex county of Loon also had good ties with the Teutonic Knights of Alden Biesen. Despite its inaccessibility (and the gate and possible viewing points are really closed) it is definitely worth a visit, if only for the outside of the walls, the remains of the moats, the avenue and the fascinating history with many noble owners and a role in the story of Loon and that state within the state that was the Teutonic Order. It is a pity that only part of the central residential tower is visible, but private is private.

Wooden Bridge Over the Mombeek

Highlight • Bridge

The Mombeek flows via Zammelen, Wintershoven, Vliermaalroot and Wimmertingen to Sint-Lambrechts-Herk, where it flows into the Herk after approximately 23 km. The Mombeek fed numerous watermills, such as the Croesmolen in Vliermaal, the Wintershovenmolen near the Desseneer farm in Wintershoven, the Rootmolen in Vliermaalroot, the Bombroekmolen (no longer on the Mombeek due to the relocation of the riverbed) in Kortessem, the Luimertingenmolen in Kortessem and the mill near the castle of Mombeek between Rapertingen and Wimmertingen. In total, there were 12 watermills on the Mombeek. The name of the stream is therefore a contraction of Molenbeek.

Château Ridderborn

Highlight • Castle

Ridderborn Castle is a castle in Vliermaalroot. It is located at Baron A. de Heuschstraat 24 and was traditionally located in a swampy area.

In 1361 the property was first mentioned as a Loons fiefdom under the name Rendelborn, after the owner at the time. In 1846 it was called Château Rindel-Borne, which was renamed Ridderborn around 1900.
The current building dates from the early 19th century and features Neoclassical and Empire style elements. Its oldest part consists of a vaulted cellar. The street used to run in front of the castle, but today it runs along the back of the castle.
In front of the building there is an English garden with a pond and a forest. There are also two oak trees here, each more than 250 years old.

View of Guigoven Castle

Highlight • Castle

The castle, which was already mentioned in the 13th century, was originally a moated castle. The moat around the castle, which was fed by the Mombeek and a neighboring spring, was filled in in the 19th century, except for the current pond. The castle was heavily damaged during the wars in the second half of the 16th century. From the 17th century to the 19th century, the castle was increasingly converted into a castle farm without a military function.
The castle is a U-shaped building. The facade is partly in Maasland Renaissance style. There is a gate tower with constricted needle spire between the living quarters and the stables. The lower part of this gate tower is in limestone and dates from the early 17th century; the rest in brick and is 18th century. There is also a statue built in here, the origin of which is unknown. The house dates from 1619 and is the oldest part of the current castle.
