Chapelle Saint-Martin Ruins

Highlight • Historical Site

"The Saint-Martin chapel probably occupies the site of an ancient pagan temple built along a Roman road: in fact, on one side, Saint-Martin is located along a road which once linked the road Nîmes-Alba with roads along the Rhône valley and, on the other, a Roman funerary stele used for reuse in the base of a pillar of the chapel attests to the pagan origin of the site2.

The current chapel dates from the 11th and 12th centuries2,3: its construction began around 1050, in a place where the regional market was held4. This market having been transferred to Bagnols in 1223 on the orders of King Louis VIII4 (who also demolished the castle of the Count of Sabran which dominated the village), the chapel was abandoned by the markets and pilgrims and has not survived.

In the maquis

Highlight • Forest

To take the maquis in French means to disappear in the woods and nature. The maquis became a symbol of resistance during the Second World War. The resistance fighters called themselves maquisards.

The maquis specifically refers to those Mediterranean forests composed largely of stunted holm oaks in the middle of which you now move.

It is today the kingdom of wild boars.

The Castellas is not to be confused with the Château de Saint-Victor-Lacoste, which is a hotel found in the center of the village of the same name. Here are the ruins of an ancient castle strategically located on a rocky pyramid. From up there you overlook the Tave plain and the Rhône valley.

The ruins date from the 11th to the 12th century. From the way the fortress was designed, it seems impregnable. You can observe it along this road which slaloms between the large limestone rocks.
