Saâne Estuary

Highlight (Segment) • Other

The Saâne has its source in the Pays de Caux. After a course in an increasingly steep valley, it flows into the English Channel between Quiberville and Sainte-Marguerite-sur-mer, it is therefore a river. Benefiting from a strong flow, the Saâne was formerly equipped with mills; In its valley there were textile factories and even workers' houses.
In the 16th century, the sea rose up into the valley, as far as Longueil during high tides. This phenomenon was observable until the time when the Saâne had a free estuary, which is no longer the case today.
In good weather, you can enjoy its clear waters and the bursts of fish inhabiting it.

Sainte-Marguerite Church

Highlight • Religious Site

The Sainte-Marguerite church dates from the 12th century. Its colorful style is due to the many renovations undergone over the centuries. Among its peculiarities, we can mention the absence of a transept, a spiral column covered with shells and its 11th century stones (sandstone and tuff). Some parts are very well preserved, such as the high altar and its Romanesque capitals. If you enter the building, you can admire the stained glass windows by Max Ingrand, works from the mid-20th century. A journey through time, before continuing your hike!

Valleuse de Vasterival

Highlight • Gorge

The valleuses are small beaches between the cliffs - gorges. That of Vasterival impresses with its breathtaking view. A rocky and wild site away from where you can find yourself. But to get to it you will have to go down the cliff. A fairly narrow path allows you to arrive on this magnificent and intimate beach.

Pleasant path in the green woods of Vasterival. Abundant vegetation and a small, gentle stream make the slope less severe!

The location of the church is special: high on the cliff offers a dizzying view of the sea and the chalk cliffs.
The church (12th century), with a 16th century portal, consists of two naves located next to each other. The choir of the large nave is decorated with an abstract stained glass window by Ubac and three oil paintings by Michel Ciry. In the southern nave, the stained glass window by Georges Braque depicts Jesse's tree.
next to the church and opposite the sea is the small, very poetic sailor's cemetery. The grave of Georges Braque (1882-1963) is located to the left of the entrance. This great Fauvist from Arguentueil, who, with his comrade Picasso, was at the root of the Cubist shock, had a studio in Varengeville. Not far from him is the musician and composer Albert Roussel (1869-1937) buried.

The Gorge des Moutiers offers a landscape where sea and rock come together. Accessible by the GR 21 route at low tide, this valley leads you to a beautiful beach. You can then enjoy a magnificent view of the Saint-Valéry church, at the top of the white cliff.
