View from Wegelnburg Castle

Highlight • Castle

Beautiful view from the castle, which is currently undergoing renovation work... which will take a while... 3 men don't do much when building a castle...😏... but it will be beautiful

Wegelnburg Castle Ruins

Highlight • Castle

The highest castle in the Palatinate, at 571 meters above sea level, is located right on the border with Alsace in France. It impresses with a very well-preserved upper castle and, due to its height, offers a perfect panorama over the gently rolling hills of the Wasgau.

This beautiful path begins just above Schönau, where you can walk a good 3km on a single trail up the mountain to the key rock and then on to Wegelnburg.
The path is also part of the Franco-German Castle Trail.

Key Rock

Highlight • Natural Monument

Interesting rocks on the German-French castle path. Not to be confused with the highest, the same name rock formation at Drachenfelsen, near Daahn, which with approx. 60 meters wall height is the highest in the Palatinate Forest.

Schlüsselfels Shelter

Highlight • Mountain Hut

Refuge just before the Schlüsselfels. Interesting boundary stones accompany me from the refuge to the upper level on the rock.

The small border stone is easily lost between the large rocks... along the German-French border you can find numerous of these historical witnesses

Small Table

Highlight • Natural Monument

Located not far from the border between F and D... small, almost impossible to miss... but by no means inconspicuous... nice to look at

First a nice hike and then splashing and paddling at the Königsweiher. If my favorite restaurant wasn't closed because of Corona, it would have been the perfect day. So, it was very close 😉.

After seeing the @Kauai tour, I thought I'd check it out.
In Schönau, the residents were still busy cleaning up the Michaelismarkt. But I was able to park my car again in the large parking lot in town.
After a short walk through the village, it was slowly but steadily uphill to the imposing key rock.
Then a little downhill …

From Schönau, we headed to the highest castle in the Palatinate, the Wegelnburg. The ascent, along narrow single trails through beautiful mixed forest with stunning rock formations, requires surefootedness and a good level of fitness. Once at the top, you'll be rewarded with a phenomenally beautiful and spectacular view of the Palatinate Forest. The return journey leads down a wide …

Today was Michaelis market in Schönau:

We combined that with a tour from Schönau and walked to the Wegelnburg beforehand. The 3km long single trail from Schönau over the key rock was really great!
After the tour, my hiking companion had to shop at almost every stand until she couldn't carry anything anymore :-)

It wasn't entirely effortless. But it was a great trip. At the end we had a delicious meal in Schönau. Super😊

Today we went to the Palatinate. A visit to my parents in Schönau. What could be more natural than to do our local round trip again? It was planned for a long time. But we had to be back in time for the barbecue.
