A total of 21 cast iron steles by the artist Wilfried Klaus mark the course of the former Oberwaldbahn, formerly Vogelsbergbahn, between Eichen and Hartmannshain. The originals from the old railway sleepers are on the "Haltepunkt" stele near Ortenberg and at a rest area between Altenstadt and Höchst. The Vulkanradweg, which was set up in the early 2000s, now runs on large parts of the former route.

Sections of the Oberwaldbahn were built and put into operation from 1888.
In 1975, passenger traffic was discontinued due to a lack of profitability, and from 1984 freight traffic as well.
