Saint Joseph Sandstone Relief

Highlight • Monument

The sandstone relief on Preister Straße shows St. Joseph. On his left arm he carries the child embracing the globe, on his right arm the white lily as a sign of his purity. The relief is carved from a piece of red Kyllsandstein rock.

The church was built in 1742. The first parish church in Auw is mentioned in 1330. She was the mother church for the Maximiner possessions of Auw, Hosten and Wellkyll. Preist finally came to the parish of Auw in 1688.
A document in the Diocese Archives of Trier says: "On the very old little church (which was demolished in 1738 because of the new building) was the French coat of arms, three lilies and a rose."

It is historically verifiable that Auw an der Kyll has been a popular place of pilgrimage for at least 300 years. The Auwer pilgrimage book from 1712 contains the names of pilgrims from almost all places in the southern Eifel, but especially of pilgrims from the well-known wine villages of the Moselle, Saar and Ruwer and from the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
Personalities such as Elector Karl Josef von Lorraine (1711 - 1715) and bishops from Trier also signed the Auwer pilgrim book with their own hands.
The patron saint's festival is the Assumption of Mary, popularly known as "Krautwischtag". Even today, the miraculous image of the Queen of Heaven from Auw is the goal of many prayers.
The church is a simple quarry sandstone building, simply plastered, with high, round-arched closed windows. The buttresses just listed are covered in stone with slate. (Source: auw-an-der-kyll.de)
