The approximately 7800 m² Cathedral Square is located directly next to the cathedral in the center of Verden.

The area was originally used as a burial site for the Andreas Church and Cathedral congregation. From 1798, the garrison cemetery was used for burials and the cemetery in the city center was abandoned. The garrison cemetery still exists today as the cathedral cemetery under the management of the cathedral congregation.

The cemetery, which was no longer in use, was then leveled and used as a parade ground in 1815 until the church objected. The Cathedral Square was then made into a park-like structure.

During the renovation of the cathedral in 1829/32, 120 graves were uncovered in the church. The bones found were reburied in the middle of the Cathedral Square. A small monument was initially erected as a memorial, which was replaced in 1859 by a monument built in the Gothic style.

On the occasion of Martin Luther's 400th birthday on November 11, 1883, the citizens of Verden erected a memorial stone.
