View from the Solkan Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

The world's oldest stone arch railway bridge. This engineering masterpiece was built at the beginning of the last century, in 1905, as part of the famous Bohinj Railway line connecting Gorica with Jesenice. 1,960 m3 of stone in the form of 4,533 carved stone blocks were used for its construction. Rail traffic on the new line between Vienna and the port of Trieste began in 1906. The bridge was destroyed in World War I, but was rebuilt according to the original plans, so it still serves its original purpose today. The bridge in Solkan has been a listed monument since 1985.

Kanal on the Soča

Highlight • Settlement

Isonzo Canal (Kanal ob Soči) is a picturesque medieval village that stands on the left bank of the Isonzo River (Soča). Don't miss the Gothic house, the Neptune fountain and Pečno Park, a few steps from the center. In the summer months it is possible to take a refreshing dip in the anise-coloured waters of the river.

Most na Soči Lake

Highlight • Lake

Most na Soči is a compact settlement in the Upper Soča, at the southern end of the Tolmin Basin in the northwestern part of Slovenia, which lies at an altitude of about 170 meters.

The settlement is located in the Municipality of Tolmin, at the confluence of the Soča and Idrijca rivers, which with their streams, cut deep into the rocky troughs, offered the settlement good defensive protection. Due to the damming of the Soča near Podsel (for the needs of the Doblar hydroelectric power plant in 1938), an accumulation lake was created here, which today is the bay of the bay, and a lake was formed below the settlement. It has recently become a popular spot for fishermen and tourists.

The place lies at an important traffic crossroads, as in its immediate vicinity the paths in the direction of Nova Gorica, Tolmin and along the Idrijca towards Idrija and Ljubljana branch off, and the route of the Jesenice - Sežana railway line runs nearby. It is the location and favorable climatic conditions that enabled the development of the first settlement in prehistoric times. Rich finds from the Late Bronze Age prove that the place was already inhabited at this time, although, judging by the rich finds from the Iron Age, the settlement experienced its greatest prosperity only at this time. After the old name of the place, Saint Lucia (the name was changed to the current one by a decree from 1952), the name "Svetolucija culture" was established for this period. The place also played an important cultural and political role in the Roman Empire.

In the village stands the church of St. Mavra, first mentioned in written sources as early as 1192.

G1 Isonzo Cycle Route

Highlight • Cycleway

A nearly perfect, very shady, paved bike path along and slightly above the Soca River, next to the single-track railway line. There are also many rest areas with tables and seating, as well as several clearings for admiring the emerald-green waters of the Soca.
