Old Exeter Road Climb

Highlight • Trail

The climb from Chudleigh up to Haldon Forest, a real brute but thankfully beautiful! It's known as Old Exeter Road, presumably the historic route over Haldon from Chudleigh before the A38 was built. Pace yourself as it takes a while, but once past the estate gates and around the corner the last section is gorgeous through the trees, and you may see some of the melanistic (dark-coloured) Haldon deer.

A relatively open part of the blue-rated Spicers Trail, here you wind between the small pine trees and heather on the singletrack. It's pretty flat and pedally, but you'll have to dodge the puddles in the wet!

Here you can hire mountain bikes for riding at Haldon Forest Park and enquire about the Segway tours that operate here. It's right next to the cafe, car park, play area and toilets so there's plenty of facilities for all the family.

Bike servicing is also offered here, so if your mountain bike could do with a little TLC, it's a great place to come. At the end of the ride, make the most of the bike wash too (a small charge applies), so that's one less thing to clean when you get home!

Brilliant little cafe at the heart of Haldon Forest Park, just next to the car park, bike hire and loos.

There's both inside and outside seating, so you can sit on the covered deck and watch your bike if you're covered in mud without feeling too bad!

I'd highly recommend the soup and cheese scone combo and the homemade cakes for a mid-trail snack.

Haldon Forest MTB Skills Park

Highlight • MTB Park

Step ups, boardwalk, drop offs, berms and tabletops; there are a few different things to practice here in a small area. Most features are progressive, so you can start small and work on your technique before building up to bigger obstacles.

Make sure you keep an eye on what other riders are doing in this area to avoid any accidents.

Haldon Forest Park opened the new start to the red trail in mid December 2023 and it's fantastic. It's packed gravel with berms at the start, then splits in two. Take the right 'short cut' to cut the entire red in two (or take it to ride back to the start and do the new section again) or stay left to carry on along the new bit and then get onto the usual red.

This new section is nowhere near as challenging as the main red, but it's super fast and fun. As it spits you out on the fire track after a short distance, it's great for kids too, who can have a great time on this punchy gravel but bail before the red gets hairy. The way it's set up means it's easy to only do this bit, ride back to the start, and do it again and again.

Kiddens Trail

Highlight • MTB Park

The blue-rated Kiddens trail is really good and has some great blasts, but can be pretty pedally in some parts too.

There are few trail features which makes it a great option for novice riders, but can also be really fun at speed!

Parts of the trail or fire roads are shared with hikers and other trail users so make sure you ride with care.
