Cholera Burial Ground, York

York suffered a devastating cholera outbreak in 1832, affecting at least 450 people and causing 185 deaths in a city of just over 25,000. The disease's rapid spread overwhelmed existing overcrowded burial grounds, where shallow graves posed a health risk. Civic authorities designated a new burial ground outside the city walls specifically for cholera victims. This decision sparked controversy, with some objecting to using the city moats or ramparts for burials.

St Martin's Church, Coney Street

The church of St Martin, Coney Street, was first mentioned in a document of c.1160-1180. The church was confirmed to the Dean and Chapter of York in 1194 and a vicarage was ordained there by the thirteenth century. Between 1331 and 1443, six other York churches belonging to the Dean and Chapter were annexed to St Martin; these were St Michael le Belfrey, St John’s Ousebridge, St Mary’s Layerthorpe, St Andrew’s, St John’s and one moiety of St Helen-on-the-Walls. St Martin’s Church was completely rebuilt in the 15th century, making it one of the grandest in York.

Lendal Tower

Lendal Tower dates to the 13th century and was originally circular and similar in appearance to the Barker Tower in the opposite side of the river Ouse. Every night a great iron chain, stored in the tower, was stretched across the river to prevent boatmen to enter the city without paying toll.

From 1616 until 1846, the tower was used as waterworks and provided the town with fresh water. Until the construction of the Lendal bridge in 1863, a ferry service crossed the river between the two towers.

Barker Tower

North Street Postern Tower is first mentioned in 1376 as 'the tower on the water of Ouse behind the tannery', and in later centuries as Barkertowre. Here one end of the chain blocking the river was secured. It was usually let to the ferryman operating the ferry across the Ouse to St. Leonard's Landing (discontinued after the opening of Lendal Bridge in January 1863). The tower was used as a mortuary from 1879, was restored in 1930, and until further restoration in 1970 served as a store for the Parks Department.
