Rhine-Herne Canal - Start of the KLT

Highlight • River

Every canal in Europe is easy to navigate. In Germany, they are under the control of the shipping authorities. There are so-called "commercial routes of the authority" along the canals everywhere.

The König Ludwig route is nearby. The route that has been completed so far starts in the south at the "Herner Meer", the port and lock area on the Rhine-Herne Canal in Castrop-Rauxel. It goes from the Rhine-Herne Canal (in Herne) on a former railway line to Recklinghausen Suderwich to the König Ludwig mine. The railway line is to be extended to Oer-Erkenschwick.

It has always been nice to cycle along the canal, to enjoy nature, to use it as a connecting route or simply to let your soul dangle and take a break

Grimberg sickle

Highlight (Segment) • Bridge

Get on the bike at the Jahrhunderthalle in Bochum, cycle on the Erzbahn route up to the Zoom Erlebniswelt in Gelsenkirchen and then continue the tour through the Emscherbruch to the Hoheward heap in the district of Recklinghausen: the new pedestrian and cyclist bridge over the Rhein-Herne canal at the harbor Grimberg makes that possible. It connects the recreational areas north and south of the canal directly and without long detours.

The asymmetrical steel structure, whose name Grimberger Sichel was found at a public competition, crosses the canal in a semicircular arc on the western edge of the harbor. Suspended only by a 48 meter high steel pylon on the north side of the canal, the curved bridge has a span of around 150 meters. The northern, 37-meter-long ramp is formed by concrete retaining walls, and the southern, 34-meter-long ramp is made as a dam. More than 600 cubic meters of concrete and 235 meters of large bored piles for the abutments as well as 400 tons of steel and 465 meters of rope for the suspended structure were used.

The bridge was awarded the 2010 European Steel Bridges Award by the European Steel Construction Convention. This honors outstanding steel bridge constructions in Europe.

Highlight (Segment) • Bridge

Where coal tenders once drove is now a good place to cycle. The many bridges testify to the wealth of ideas in the region when it comes to steel structures. If art comes from skill, all these bridges are works of art of industrial history.

A typical steel truss bridge can be seen here. Especially on hot days, the route, which lies on a steep gravel embankment, is very pleasant due to the dense tree population.

Today we went on another bike ride in the Ruhr area. We started under overcast skies and 15° and the weather got better and better by late afternoon (more gaps in the clouds and 23°).

Some very nice sections of railway line, but also along the water with the canal and the Emscher.
