Guildford Castle and Gardens

Highlight • Historical Site

William the Conqueror is well known for demolishing castles but he built some too, apparently including this little known highlight of Guildford, tucked out of sight just off the High Street.

Shere Village Centre

Highlight • Rest Area

Famously used as the English setting in the classic romcom The Holiday, Shere is considered by many to be Surrey's prettiest village. Nestled on the River Tillingbourne, its idyllic country lanes and attractive houses make it a popular place to visit. It's located just to the south of the North Downs escarpment and there are many walking trails in the surrounding countryside.

Raikes Lane Climb

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

Quiet little lane that links the road from Holmbury St Mary to White Down. The southern end has a short, very narrow steep climb that needs care when descending whereas from the north it is a longer more gradual hill. Nice view from the top towards the Downs.

St Mary's Church, Holmbury St Mary

Highlight • Settlement

Built on a prominent hillside at the heart of the village that was created at the same time, St Mary's was designed, built and given to the parish by the eminent Victorian architect, George Edmund Street, in memory of his second wife. It was consecrated in 1879.

Heartwood Coffee

Highlight • Cafe

The food here is great - sausage/bacon in a bun, assorted cakes and much more. Coffee is also great and cold drinks are available. You can sit outside or shelter from the rain on the sofa in the barn.
