Yewbarrow

Highlight • Summit

This is the fourth Wasdale peak on our Trail 100 list, but despite being the lowest, Yewbarrow is more than a match for its neighbours. Taking the form of an upturned ship’s hull, the mountain is steep sided, intricately craggy at either end, with a long, drawn out summit that opens up some of the best scenery in the Lakes.

View of Yewbarrow

Highlight • Summit

Yewbarrow has some great scrambling at either end, however, would not recommend to try to descend at the Dore head end, quite challenging in places

Red Pike (Wasdale)

Highlight • Natural Monument

Red Pike is a 2,710-foot (826 m) mountain in the Western Lake District that sits between Yewbarrow to the south and Scoat Fell to the north. It falls along the classic Mosedale Horseshoe - a brilliant hill walking route from Wasdale. I visited in May 2021 when there was snow on the ground.

Scoat Fell

Highlight • Natural Monument

Scoat Fell is a Wainwright in the Western Lake District. Its summit is rather underwhelming in comparison to its neighbours - Pillar, Red Pike and Steeple. An impressive dry stone wall runs along the summit at 2,759 feet (841 m). I love the view to Steeple from here. On a clear day you can see beyond this across the Solway Firth to Scotland.

Haycock Summit

Highlight • Climb

Haycock is a Western Lake District Wainwright fell that can be accessed from a few different angles when linked to other Wainwrights. From the North East, it can be walked from Steeple or Scoat Fell. From the South it can be walked from Seatallan or Middle Fell. From the North West it can be walked from Caw Fell. I've tried all approaches and it's all great hill walking!

View of Wast Water and Yewbarrow

Highlight • Viewpoint

Yewbarrow is steep but worth the effort. Brilliant views of Wast Water and the surrounding fells. I ascended Yewbarrow via Bell Rib which is a grade 1 scramble. I then descended via another grade 1 scramble Stirrup Crag. Both of which are straight forward during dry conditions with care exercised.
