The castle in Jægerspris was built between 1300 and 1400. But like many other castles in Denmark, it has been expanded and rebuilt over the centuries. The oldest part is the right north wing with three floors. The south wing is from 1590-1600 and the east wing from 1730-1731. King Frederik VII's common-law wife Louise Christine Rasmussen, better known as Countess Danner, inherited the castle. She founded a children's home in 1867 and, with the King Frederik VII Foundation, ensured that the castle would continue to serve as a children's home and homes for poor and needy young women even after her death.

Café Danner is also operated on the castle grounds as a social-educational institution. The café is highly recommended.
