Hubertus Bräu Brewery

Highlight • Monument

The brewery Hubertus - how it all began

The history of Hubertus Brewery goes back well into the Middle Ages. At that time, the exclusive right to brew beer was awarded by the father of the country to monasteries, castles and important cities. The city of Laa an der Thaya had to suffer in the years around 1440 in particularly troubled periods. To revive the economy and commerce, the city fathers sought the coveted brewing law. Finally, it was awarded to them in 1454 by Ladislaus Posthumus, Duke of Austria, King of Bohemia and Hungary, for the city. In return, he demanded from the citizens of Laa to deliver him a barrel of beer on all high holidays - beer enjoyment from Laa on the Thaya was a royal pleasure even then. Until 1847, the city of Laa had always leased the right to brew. This year, Anton Kühtreiber bought brewing right and brewery and thus laid the foundation for today's Hubertus Bräu.
