Grožnjan is located on a hill overlooking the Mirna Valley. It was an important pre-Roman settlement, and later a Roman fortress. After ups and downs, Grožnjan came under the rule of the Republic of Venice from 1358 until 1797. In these first years the town was fortified with mighty walls and the Palazzo Ducale was built. The Porta Maggiore, very well preserved, has a drawbridge and the coat of arms of Captain Pietro Dolfin.
