In the middle of a hilly wine region in the north of Slovenia lies the city of Maribor and with it one of the bike park classics par excellence: top-class mountain bike competitions have been held here for decades, including the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup - Maribor's downhill course is legendary!

But Maribor is not only worth a visit for downhill pros. There are a total of three routes (the Red Line, the Flow & Family Line and the Black Line), which have something for everyone from professionals to family tours. You can easily reach all routes by lift. Day tickets cost between 14 euros (children) and 22 euros (adults), and the park is included in the Gravity Card, which allows you to use 22 of Europe's best bike parks.

In summer, the Maribor bike park is open daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and on weekends until 5 p.m. You can find current information about the bike park at visitpohorje.si/kolesarski-park

Church of Sveti Areh

The Church of Sveti Areh occupies a pleasant spot in the Pohorje Mountains just by the Ruško koča mountain hut at the western end of the Mariborsko Pohorje ski resort. It was first mentioned in 1545, though the current building dates from the 1650s and was renovated in both 1999 and 2018 to give it its present appearance. Below the church is a natural spring that's said to have healing powers.

The Ruše Hut (Ruska koca) is a mountain hut in the Pohorje Mountains. It was built by locals in 1907. Over the years, the building has been expanded and now offers accommodation for hikers. The hut is open all year round. You can easily make a reservation online: ruskakoca.si.

The hut stands on a small plateau on the southern side of the Pohorje. The first cottage was opened in this place in 1913 by the German Mountain Society of Maribor. After World War I, it was bought by the SPD Maribor branch and opened after the reorganization in 1922. The cottage where the Germans occupied a military post during the occupation were burnt on in 1944.

On the old foundations, the mountaineers laid a new cottage on the old foundations and opened it two years later. The exterior of the hut is still as it was at the opening, but in the interior it was much improved later on. In 1990, the Maribor Marine PD planned to build a new cottage, but due to financial difficulties, the construction was postponed. In 1992 and 1993 they renovated the old cottage, newly furnished sleeping rooms, arranged sanitary facilities, installed a new Alpine hut, always open.
