Description
If you're looking for a high-payoff, low-effort hike with dramatic scenery, the High Falls Gorge Potholes – High Falls loop from High Falls (Main) is an excellent choice. This easy 0.7-mile (1.1 km) hiking route features just 34 feet (10 metres) of elevation gain and takes only about 16 minutes to complete, making it perfect for families or anyone wanting a quick immersion in nature's power.
What to expect on High Falls Gorge Potholes – High Falls loop from High Falls (Main)
This route, often referred to as the Waterfall Walk, guides you through a stunning gorge environment. You'll traverse well-maintained paths, sturdy bridges, and modern walkways, including sections with glass platforms that offer unique views directly over the Ausable River. The highlight is undoubtedly the four majestic waterfalls—Rainbow Falls, Climax Falls, Mini Falls, and Main Falls—as they cascade into an ancient granite crevice. You'll also get a close look at unique natural potholes, including the impressive Master Pothole, carved by river currents over millions of years. While the full loop includes stairs, an easier quarter-mile option is wheelchair accessible, ensuring this dramatic landscape is available to all.
Planning your visit
The Waterfall Walk is generally a half-mile round trip loop, with the full experience taking about 45 minutes if you linger. During winter, the waterfalls transform into spectacular ice formations; the Waterfall Walk is cleared, and traction devices are provided for visitors. If you're looking for a longer outing, you can combine this loop with the separate 1-mile Nature Trail, though that trail involves steep inclines and requires snowshoes in winter. This trail is very family friendly and offers viewpoints year-round.
