Ese de Calleras

Highlight • Settlement

That of Calleras is a common starting point to visit the stretch of the Hoces del Esva between Calleras and Bustiello, which is usually done round trip along the same path. The route passes through the village, visits the small church of San Pedro, which preserves a pre-Romanesque window, and continues along the road to the entrance to the gorges, where there is a small car park and an information panel. Immediately there is a fork with a direction post and a sign to Navelgas along the Senda Huella del Oro, with a detour to Naraval along the short-distance trail PR-AS 287 Las Vueltas del Gato. The main route to Las Hoces continues to the right, climbs a slope on the side of the valley and enters the river gorge. Otters, trout, kingfishers, dippers and other species common in Asturian rivers live in the Hoces del Esva.

The path leaves the forest and enters Bustiello de Paredes, home to the Hoces del Esva Interpretation Centre. Bustiello is an old cowboy town with traditional hórreos, stone and wood houses, some picturesque buildings and a green and pleasant environment. After the exciting and wild crossing in the Hoces del Esva, the open and serene landscape of the Bustiello pastoral fields seems from another time in any other place. In the center of the village there is a fork in front of a granary with the white and yellow markings of the short-distance path. The route continues to the right, runs along a stretch of road and crosses the Esva river bridge to connect with the concrete track that goes up to Longrey. The houses are coupled on the side of a hill with views of the meadows and the villages scattered in one of the meanders of the Esva. The landscape looks like an artist's canvas due to the perfect distribution of colors, houses, fruit trees, forest patches and small green patches of pasture.

The path runs through several sections of walkways and wooden stairs that go up and down the side of the canyon, sometimes along the riverbank and sometimes at a certain height in the steepest areas. The path passes through the ruins of an old dam and saves a rocky pass with exposure to the void protected by a rope handrail. Further on, the crossroads of trails appears with the variant that descends from El Cabanón.
