Fountain at Plaça de la Reina

Highlight • Monument

The "Plaça de la Reina", built in 1863, is located at the end of the Paseo del Borne west of the cathedral in the historic center of the island's capital, Palma. In the middle of the square is a round fountain surrounded by a flower bed in honor of Joan Alcover. In addition, there are some ombú trees in the complex that are otherwise only native to South America. Furthermore there is a stand for the coachmen from Palma.

Palma Town Hall

Highlight • Monument

First, the boring facts:
This building housed a hospital from 1230 and a university from 1249 before the city administration moved in. Structural elements of the hospital are said to still be visible inside the building.

But there are also some really interesting facts:
– At the front of the Ajuntament is a long stone bench, called the "Idler's Bench." In the past, those who didn't have a job or didn't want to work sat here. When someone asked them why they weren't working, the answer always began with "If it weren't for..." and ended with an excuse like "...this or that hurts me."
Today, you'll hardly find any Mallorcans sitting here. No one wants to be suspected of being lazy.
– When the building's facade was being designed, the two sculptors asked the mayor for permission to have their names inscribed in small letters on the wall. The mayor, however, denied them this request. The two sculptors weren't satisfied with that, though. They discreetly added a snail and a lizard to the ornaments of the main entrance. The names of the two sculptors were Caragol and Dragón – snail and lizard.

On the beautiful, rectangular Plaça Major, the main square in the Upper Town, which is seamlessly framed by yellow-painted facades and arcades, tourists are almost among themselves.

The Basilica of St. Michael (Spanish Basílica de San Miguel) is a church in the old town of Palma on Mallorca, Spain. The church, in the Diocese of Mallorca, is dedicated to the Archangel Michael and holds the title of a minor basilica.

San Miquel was built after the Reconquista from 1229 onwards. The church is said to stand on the site of the great mosque of Madina Mayurqa, but no traces of it remain.
In 1390, a larger new building was constructed in the Gothic style. What remains of it is the facade with the image of the Archangel Michael and the bell tower on its square base.
From 1632, the church was enlarged again and redesigned in the Baroque style.
In 2018, the church was elevated to the rank of a minor basilica by Pope Francis.

The single-nave church with its side chapels has a Gothic portal, begun in 1398 by the sculptor Pere de Sant Joan, with the sculpture of Ramon Llull on the upper left being particularly striking. The tympanum depicts a Virgin with Child and two angels.
The Gothic bell tower is also preserved, crowned by a typical Mallorcan pyramid roof with a cross.

The vault of the choir features a striking painting by Jaume Morey.
The altarpiece of the high altar is by Francisco de Herrera, dominated by the figures of the three archangels. On the sides of the main altar are two large paintings by the artist Juan Muntaner Cladera.

The church also forms the sanctuary of Maria de la Salut, the patron saint of Palma revered by the Majorcans. In the third side chapel on the right is an image of the Mother of God with Child, which, according to tradition, was brought to Palma by James I, as is also depicted in a painting in the chapel.

La Rambla

Highlight • Structure

There are Ramblas in several Spanish cities. It is said that this Rambla is nothing special compared to other Ramblas, such as the one in Barcelona (I also find some other streets worth seeing there), nevertheless it is one of the most famous promenades in Palma. The word Rambla derives from the Arabic word for sand and today means "road to the sea".

The Torrent Sa Riera flowed along here through the middle of the city as early as the Middle Ages. When there was heavy rainfall at Puig de Galatzó, severe flooding sometimes occurred here. In 1403, 1,500 houses were destroyed by the water masses and 5,000 people drowned in the floods. In 1613 it was decided to go ahead and redirected the torrent.
With moderate success: there were at least 4 other severe floods. It was not until 1850 that the diversion was channeled, which has since protected Palma from further flood disasters.

Palma's old town is magnificent. Small, winding streets where you can experience both the old Palma and modern shops.

You should plan to spend at least a day there.

Santa Eulàlia Church, Palma de Mallorca

Highlight • Religious Site

This is one of the oldest churches in the city. Already in 1236, a chapel was built by the Christian conqueror of Majorca, King Jaume I, at this point.
A statue of Saint Eulàlia from 1621 is located in the main portal.
A crucifix, possibly already brought to Majorca by Jaume I in 1229, can be found in the side chapel of Sant Christ.
