Skalka Reservoir Dam

Highlight • Monument

The Skalka Dam (Vodní nádrž Skalka) is located west of the city of Cheb in the Czech Republic. It damms the Eger. It was built between 1962 and 1964 to ensure the drinking water supply for the city of Cheb and also flood protection. The Horka dam took over the function of a drinking water reservoir from 1969 onwards. Since then, Skalka has served as a water storage tank for industry in the Cheb area and was released for recreational purposes. The Skalka and Jesenice waterworks form a common water management system. The dam is located at the southern foot of the Spitalsky vrch (Spittelberg) in the western city of Cheb and has a height of 14.6 meters. The top of the dam is 114 meters long and four meters wide. The dam holds 13.66 million cubic meters of water (13.66 billion liters), and its reservoir extends over 9.2 kilometers to the German border.

Špalíček (Stöckl) Historic Houses, Cheb

Highlight • Historical Site

Cheb's landmark also shapes the official city logo: the Špalíček, the Cheb Stöckl. The historic block of houses on the market square dates back to the 13th century. In the oldest depiction of the city from 1472, additional buildings are visible that were later demolished. The narrow Krämergasse (Kramářská ulička) runs through the middle of the Stöckl's eleven preserved buildings.

The Cheb market square has been the center of city life for hundreds of years. It is called “King George of Poděbrad Square” (Náměsti Krále Jiřího z Poděbrad). This king, who ruled from 1458 to 1471, is little known, but was actually a visionary of European unification and of far greater importance to the city than the famous Duke Albrecht of Wallenstein, who was murdered in a house on this site in 1634. For George from Poděbrady, Eger was probably the most important city in Bohemia after Prague; he resided at Eger Castle four times. In 1462, the king drew up the first European peace plan: the continent was to be united with a confederation of states. In 1960 a monument was erected to him here at the “Scharfen Eck” at the tourist information center. The real landmark of the market square, whose structure dates back to the 13th century, is a group of houses whose core dates back to the late Gothic period, the Cheb Stöckl (Špalíček).

Cheb Castle Walls

Highlight • Castle

The tower was built in the 2nd half of the 15th century by expanding the city walls. After the town fortifications began to be gradually demolished in 1808, only the tower remained and served residential purposes, for which it was used until the end of the 19th century. In the 1980s a fire caused major damage. A complete renovation took place in 2009.

The covered wooden bridge over the Ohře, designed according to a historical model, allows pedestrians and cyclists to get from the city to the Krajinka sports and leisure area. It was also a main access point to the Marktredwitz-Cheb State Garden Show in 2006, the first Bavarian State Garden Show to be organized across the border with the Czech neighbors.

Eger Lookout Tower

Highlight • Viewpoint

The forty-meter-long bridge, designed by architect David Vávra, has spanned the Ohře since 2006, when it formed an entrance to the garden show grounds. Vávra was inspired by the drawbridge of a castle for his construction. The integrated, ten-meter-high observation tower completes the north side.
