Gran Valira River, Andorra la Vella

Highlight • River

The 'Gran Valira' is the largest river in Andorra. It flows through the capital and leaves the country in the south near the border crossing with Spain. Promenades on both sides of the river run through the whole city. In spring you can admire Japanese ornamental cherries at the height of the city park (Prat Gran).

The neo-Romanesque church 'Sant Pere Màrtir' dates from 1956 (completed in 1981). Its style is said to be reminiscent of the old buildings of the region and is a representative example of Andorran granite architecture.

Pont d'Engordany

Highlight • Bridge

The Pont d'Engordany was built in 1785 to replace an earlier bridge linking the villages of Escaldes and Engordany. The previous bridge was destroyed by a flood in 1772. It crosses the river 'Valira'.

Bordas de Entremesaigües

Highlight • Settlement

Group of old (traditional) agricultural buildings at the confluence of the rivers Madriu and Perafita, from where the name comes: lat. 'inter ambas acquas', between the two bodies of water/rivers. The place was inhabited all year round until the 1950s; probably only in summer now.

Ràmio Guard House

Highlight • Settlement

At this point are the bordas —small stone shelters that housed farmers and ranchers— and the guardhouse of the Ràmio dam. This construction was carried out by the hydroelectric company FHASA, who promised to build roads in exchange for the exploitation of the waterfalls. This meant a great advance for the Andorrans, who in the middle of the 20th century had very poor living conditions.

Fontverd Refuge

Highlight • Mountain Hut

I stopped here to eat my picnic on Day 1 of Coronallacs trail. It's a great unstaffed refuge in a pretty location, I paused for a while and watched as the stream weaved its way down into the valley. Bliss!
