Kabaty Forest

Highlight • Forest

One of the largest green spaces in Warsaw. The bike paths are wide, fairly even (you don't need particularly wide tires) and well marked. On the other hand, the main paths are so simply drawn that it lacks a certain wildness. Still, a good place for a break, relatively close to the city.

The Kabacki Forest Air Crash occurred on May 9, 1987, when a passenger plane, the Il-62M "Tadeusz Kościuszko" of Polish Airlines LOT, crashed during an attempted emergency landing. The cause of the tragedy was an engine failure and a fire on board, which led to the loss of control of the plane. The crash killed 183 passengers and crew members, making it the largest in the history of Polish aviation. At the site of the tragedy in the Kabacki Forest, there is a commemorative cross, a plaque with the names of the victims, and a monument commemorating the event. The forest area that was destroyed by the falling plane was reforested after being cleaned up.

The inscription on the plaque reads: "During World War II, German units carried out summary executions of civilians. In the Kabacki Forest in the years 1939-1944, the Germans murdered several hundred Polish political prisoners in secret executions. In this place, after the end of the war, one of the mass graves of execution victims was discovered."
