Historic Centre of Tavira

Highlight • Historical Site

Tavira is romantically located on both banks of the Gilão River, which flows into the Ria Formosa and finally into the Atlantic. Considered one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal - which of course everyone can see as they wish. Highlights are the Roman bridge, with its 7 round arches, a Moorish fortress, a generously designed town hall on arcade arches, various museums and around 20 churches.

Old/Roman Bridge 🌉 Tavira

Highlight • Bridge

Despite its name, the bridge itself is neither Roman nor has a Roman origin. It was built when Tavira belonged to al-Andalus (the Islamic Domain of Iberia), most probably in the 2nd half of the 12th century. Then, for a few decades Tavira was an independent commune, before being submitted to the Almohade Empire.
The bridge was a fundamental element of the medieval defence of Tavira and its associated main road, limited with towers in both sides. It had houses on it in the Middle Ages. By 1550 it had apparently a movable wooden floor which could be removed for security reasons. The old bridge collapsed in 1655, then completely rebuilt in its present form. tavira.algarvetouristguide.com/attractions/the-old-roman-bridge

Republic Square, Tavira

Highlight • Settlement

The square is the heart of the old town and one of the most beautiful in the country. There is a constant coming and going, and the fountain has been babbling here since the 16th century.

On the right side of the square. The large, elongated building with arcades, this is the town hall.
