Cotta’s Castle Dotternhausen

Highlight • Castle

Dotternhausen Castle, also known as Dotternhausen Castle or Cotta'sches Schloss, is a former castle and later palace on Schloßstrasse in the northeast of the village of Dotternhausen in the Zollernalbkreis in Baden-Württemberg. The castle is one of the village's landmarks. It is now privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside.
The noble lords of Dotternhausen appeared in Dotternhausen between 1228 and 1314 in the entourage of various counts, which indicates that the castle was built at the beginning of the 12th century. In the 13th century the Maier von Dotternhausen were also mentioned.

The castle was built in 1527 by Hans von Stotzingen. Austria, from 1666 the Jesuit college in Rottenburg and in 1789 the imperial counts Ernst and Ferdinand von Bissingen-Nippenburg are named as further owners.

In 1814 the publisher Friedrich von Cotta bought the castle. Thanks to the contemporary writers Goethe, Schiller, Humboldt and Herder, he became one of the best-known publicists of his time. His son Georg von Cotta, whose center of life was the Dotternhausen estate, implemented his plans for the Plettenberg rule in Dotternhausen after the abolition of serfdom was planned by the Württemberg reform king Wilhelm in 1818. In 1821 Georg took over his father's publishing house.

In 1860 the castle was renovated in the historicist style. The two-story building, the main structure of which has a gable roof and crenellated gables, is adjoined by an English-style castle park between the castle wall and Katzenbach.
