Beek Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

The Beek is - in continuation of the Winkelmann trench from Ahlbecker to Eggesiner See - the outflow from Eggesiner See to Randow. The Prussian King Friedrich II had the area around Ahlbeck repopulated by German colonies in the 18th century. However, there was a lack of sufficient land for settlement in the area. Therefore it was decided to drain the Ahlbeck lake and to open the land gained in this way for settlement.

In 1743, the Prussian War and Domain Councilor Ludwig Christian Winkelmann was commissioned with this project. Eggesiner and Ahlbeck workers dug a trench over a length of ten kilometers, which was given the name Winkelmannscher Graben. In the spring of 1744 it was finished. But it also made an outflow from Lake Eggesiner necessary. A trench was dug up to the Randow in the same year - the Beek or earlier Ahlbecke. Since 1930 its course has been straightened several times in some places.
