Limes Saxoniae at Niendorf/Stecknitz

Highlight • Historical Site

The Limes Saxoniae ran here at Trammer Weg / Niendorfer Weg.
It was an unfortified border that separated the Frankish sphere of influence
in Saxon North Albingia from the area of the Slavic Abodrites from around 809.
The Limes Saxoniae, i.e. the "border of Saxony" with the Abodrites, was agreed by Charlemagne in 809 during his last stay in northern Germany by treaty with the Abodrites, when the Eider was also established as the northern border of the empire.

With this border demarcation, the Saxon territory that Charlemagne had ceded to the Abodrites in 804 was incorporated into the Frankish Empire, which now extended to the Baltic Sea on a narrow strip between the Levensau and the Schwentine.

However, this border was not a continuous fortified defensive structure, but a line defined in the middle of a swamp and forest area that was difficult to penetrate, the actual border zone.

There is also no evidence of a border fortification at any point on the "Limes".

This "Limes" could not offer lasting protection against raids and conquests by the Abodrites, who, for example, advanced as far as Hamburg in 1066 and 1072 and destroyed the city.

The course essentially follows natural obstacles, rivers, swamps and impassable forests and is by no means as sharply defined or even fortified as the Roman Limes.

A forest sensory path is a lot of work, but it's worth it.
"All the signs have been removed, the lettering milled out and the wood repainted,"
reports district forester Jan Stäcker, who created the path in Niendorf in 2003.
Since then, it has been expanded again and again. To the left and right of the path there are touch boxes
in which children can touch things that are typical of a forest, signs with interesting information and nesting boxes high up in the trees - well camouflaged and only visible at second glance.
In Niendorf, children can "experience the forest with all their senses," says Stäcker.
You can't get any closer to nature. Children like six-year-old Finn learn in the forest which animals live in it and what types of trees there are.
The forest sensory path also includes a wild bee stand. There, beekeeper Johann-Friedrich Steffen explains everything about insects. "There is comprehensive input here," says forester Stäcker. Pensioners Karl-Heinz Divscherl, Lutz Kottlick and Anton Elsing are responsible for maintenance - "for the children", as they say. And of course they enjoy the manual work in nature, they report.
The fact that the signs are easy to read again is thanks to the "Uhlenkieker" of the Lebenshilfewerk Herzogtum Lauenburg. They milled the lettering "Waldsinnespfad" into the signposts and gave them a new color. The St. Anton kindergarten in particular uses the path for its weekly forest walks. But it is open to everyone.

The ice cream is awesome! Unfortunately not yet (February- but I could use an ice cream again), but it will be soon. To bridge the time, the farm ice cream can also be bought, e.g. at Martens in Breitenfelde.

According to Wikipedia, there are 21 Mühlenberge (Mill Hills) in Germany, almost as many as there are places named Niendorf.

There are 26 of these (with an "ie").

This Mühlenberg in Niendorf/Stecknitz, at 80.6 meters high, is quite remarkable for Schleswig-Holstein. However, you don't have to climb it, as the surrounding area is already well above sea level, and the last few meters from Mühlenweg (Mill Path) are easily manageable. The ruins of the old mill at the summit are interesting.
