In 1650, a ditch was dug from Hochgmoor to Fichtelberg to drain water and use it to drive the hammers. As a result, the moor dried out more and more. So in 1739 a reservoir was built: the Fichtelsee. In 1983 it was enlarged to a total of around eleven hectares.

It is great to cycle around the lake. In summer it invites you to go swimming or boating. In winter you can ice skate on an ice rink on the shore of the Fichtelsee. What's particularly cool is that the ice is illuminated and you can rent ice skates on site. Here in the north of the lake begins the Seelohe nature reserve, where you will find typical raised moor vegetation.
