Ribeira das Naus Promenade

Highlight • Trail

The Avenida da Ribeira das Naus connects the Praça do Comércio at the southern end of the center (Baixa) with the Cais do Sodré, a junction for trains, boats, subways and trams. Not far from there is the modernized market hall Mercado da Ribeira with many restaurants.

The Avenida itself was renovated just a few years ago and a beautiful promenade was created.

Seaside Promenade 🚴🌊 Caxias-Cruz Quebrada

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Between Cruz Quebrada and Caxias a world-class quality, wide and very smooth, color divided biking and pedestrian multiuse trail has been built into the sea along the shore. Possibly the best biking section between Cascais and Lisboa. It follows the coastline high above potential storm flood level, with natural granite blocks sloping out and down to the sea.

Caxias Beach

Highlight • Beach

The Fort of São Bruno is situated on the estuary of the River Tagus in Caxias, Oeiras municipality, near Lisbon in Portugal. It was built in 1647 and became operational in 1649 as part of the construction of a line of forts to control access to Lisbon, which stretched from Cabo da Roca on the Atlantic coast to the Belém Tower near Lisbon. The fort is well preserved, following its original design, and is considered one of the most attractive examples of maritime military architecture on the Portuguse coast. It presently serves as the headquarters of the Associação Portuguesa dos Amigos dos Castelos (Portuguese association of friends of castles).
During the Portuguese Restoration War, King John IV of Portugal identified the need to strengthen Lisbon's defences in the face of attacks by the Spanish navy. In 1647 he ordered construction of a fort at Caxias to improve the defence of the right bank of the Tagus by making possible crossfire with the Fort of Nossa Senhora do Vale (Our Lady of the Valley) to the east, now demolished, and the Fort of Giribita to the west, thus reinforcing the major Fort of São Julião da Barra to the west. António Luís de Meneses, 1st Marquis of Marialva, was given responsibility for the work. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_of_São_Bruno

Municipal Square

Highlight • Settlement

The Praça do Município is a square with harmonious proportions, surrounded by Pombaline buildings.
It was built after the earthquake of 1755 to house the Senate, whose palace had previously been located on the Rossio.
By building the Senate building on this site, Marquês de Pombal wanted to symbolically link local and central power.
In the center of the square and opposite the Paço do Concelho stands the spiral-shaped pillory crowned with an armillary sphere, which became a symbol of urban independence.
