Main Building of the Former German Red Cross, Griebnitzsee Campus, University of Potsdam

Highlight • Historical Site

This building was inaugurated in 1943 as the presidential and administrative building of the German Red Cross. It is that
largest and at the same time most imposing building
the site of the former DRK main camp. It consists of an approximately 160 meter long three and a half storey main part
with a central risalit. Above the three entrance doors with the four conspicuous spear lamps
reminiscent of lanterns rises a "Führer balcony".
..
Since the building was representative and was in the immediate vicinity of the requisitioned area for the participants of the Potsdam Conference in 1946, it was probably used by the high command of the "Group of Soviet Armed Forces" for about 5 years.
From 1951 the Academy for Political Science and Law was located here
of the GDR, ultimately the Institute for International
Relationship that was responsible for the training of diplomats in the GDR ... Since 1994 the Faculty of Law, Economics and Social Sciences of the University of Potsdam has been based here. This building was built in 1902 as an invalids' home for the Kaiser Wilhelm Foundation and became the Nowawes retirement home in 1927. During GDR times it was used by the Reichsbahn and is now the headquarters of the Hasso Plattner Institute. Source: Jörg Limberg: Neubabelsberg. History and architecture of a Potsdam villa colony. Currently, almost every place in Potsdam is being built, so you can and should definitely discover Potsdam by bike and the view of St. Nikolai is always worthwhile.

From here, you have a beautiful view of the Alte Fahrt and its promenade. 🙂
It's worth stopping for a moment!

Formed from alluvium at the mouth of the Nuthe and the Havel, the island has always been secluded in the middle of the attractive river landscape and at the same time in the immediate vicinity of the city center, which had a significant influence on its development.

The island got its present form at the beginning of the 19th century with the construction of the long bridge (Schinkel) in the years 1824/25 and the expansion of the new route into a navigable canal. In one of the first small gardens on the otherwise flat, grazing island, the owner, tobacconist Gems, occasionally held small rose festivals and in 1841 called it "Island of Friendship" in his will. From 1845 his son-in-law ran a tourist restaurant in the same place using this name, which then gradually spread to the entire island.

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Bridge from Potsdam to Babelsberg. I use this bridge a lot, especially coming out of Park Babelsberg and heading into Potsdam's Hollandische Viertel off Nuthestrasse and onto Gutenbergstrasse for coffee and bagels. A fine surface.

You can go down to the waters edge path at the south east end. The Park Babelsberg is worth including on your route. The path along the water has a fine view onto Potsdam and later the Glienicke Brücke.
