The Mühlendamm in Bergen is a street of historical significance. A watermill once stood there, in use until the 1970s. After being struck by lightning in 1903, it was rebuilt and later converted into residential space. A remaining mill pond and an old millstone still bear witness to its former use. The nearby Bürgerpark invites you to linger.

The 1000-Year-Old Oak of Bergen

Highlight • Natural Monument

The so-called "1,000-year-old oak on Kirchberg" is an imposing natural monument and cultural landmark of the city. It stands centrally behind St. Lamberti Church and is easily accessible. Despite its name, its actual age is estimated at around 350 years.

It is a pedunculate oak (Quercus robur) with a breast height of 7.50 meters and a height of around 25 meters. Its crown diameter of 28 meters is particularly impressive. The trunk grows straight up for about six meters before the crown divides into two large main branches.

The oak is in very good vitality, with only a small amount of deadwood, and is considered a symbol of the long history and the connection of the city of Bergen with its natural environment – it is even depicted in a stylized form on the city's coat of arms.

Bench by the pond

Highlight • Rest Area

The bench in Nindorf, overlooking the small pond, is an idyllic resting place for cyclists looking to take a relaxing break on their tour. Surrounded by lush greenery, flowering riparian plants, and the still waters of the pond, the shady spot invites you to linger. The bench itself is comfortably inclined, ideal for stretching your legs and simply gazing over the tranquil water.

Bleckmar Watermill

Highlight • Monument

The old mill was built near Sehlhof in the 13th century and moved to its current location in Bleckmar around 1550. The mill dam and the later "Herrengraben" were built in the middle of the 16th century to contain the flooding from the moor. The mill itself was shut down in 1973. The mill pond behind it has a picturesque character. Very easy to reach by bike.
