Wilmersdorf Forest Cemetery Güterfelde

Highlight • Historical Site

In 1909, the rural community Friedenau acquired a property near the then opened Protestant southwestern cemetery Stahnsdorf. Friedenau had become a popular residential area of the bourgeoisie, but its inhabitants could only offer the small cemetery on the Stubenrauchstraße, which soon reached its capacity limit. The occasion was the announcement of the neighboring Wilmersdorf, which also had great problems with the numerous newcomers, in the future to take no more bodies from Friedenau.
The design of the forest property was transferred to the Friedenauer Gemeindebaurat Hans Altmann. He had built an unusually large cemetery chapel with clinker facade, to the administrative building, the house of the cemetery keeper with the flower shop and verklinkerte wells and benches. Model for the installation of the cemetery was the floor plan of the municipality Friedenau.
In June 1913 the cemetery railway was opened to Stahnsdorf. The first burial in the cemetery of the community Friedenau took place in August 1913. But already in 1920 Friedenau was incorporated as a district of the district Schöneberg to Greater Berlin. The cemetery was now called Waldfriedhof Schöneberg. After an administrative reform in 1935, the administration of the cemetery was the district Wilmersdorf, which already served since 1920, the Wilmersdorfer Waldfriedhof Stahnsdorf nearby, transferred. Since then he bears the name of today.

The cemetery, which today is one of the most beautiful in Berlin, was never properly accepted. After 1920 there were four municipal cemeteries for the Friedenauer alone in Schöneberg, the funeral habits changed more and more in favor of the space-saving urn grave - and with the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961, this cemetery for the West Berliners only with great effort accessible. The residents of Güterfelde had their own graveyard, but could also be buried here in GDR times. The city of Berlin did not know what to do with the revived legacy after the fall of the Wall, as today there are many free grave sites in most inner-city cemeteries. Although all the buildings were extensively restored in the 1990s, refurbishments for this listed cemetery are no longer permitted.

Bäkemühle

Highlight • Structure

The listed Bäkemühle was built in 1357, destroyed several times and rebuilt. In recent years it has housed a restaurant, but now a doctor's office can be found here. The building is also worth seeing from the outside.

Cycle path along Potsdamer Chaussee

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Unfortunately, this bike path ends to the east in Stahnsdorf. From Stahnsdorf it goes "officially" from the right "bike path" on the left "bike path".
Hopefully, however, soon all the sections will be like this one in the picture.
