Lake Königssee

Highlight • Lake

The Königssee lies like a fjord between steeply rising gray rock faces. The almost 2,000 meter high walls are so steep that they plunge seamlessly into the water of the lake. Since there is no path along the shore, the fastest and most promising way for you is across the lake with one of the excursion boats. In order to protect the water quality and nature, all boats used are operated exclusively with electric motors or physical power.

View of Watzmann

If you're lucky and it's quiet and there aren't many hikers around that day, you can see marmots. Time flies very quickly when you're watching these cute little animals. Especially when there's not just one marmot, but several coming out of their burrows, crawling around or coming out of different holes. A very special highlight.

The Jenner is a worthwhile summit destination because of its magnificent view of the surrounding peaks and the Königssee. You shouldn't miss the view.

Different ways lead you to the top. The easiest is the cable car. ;-)

The Jennerbahn is a two-section gondola lift in Schönau am Königssee on the Jenner. The railway was built in 1952/3 and replaced by a new building from 2017 to 2019. In winter operation, the Jenner ski area, which is accessed by the Jennerbahn, also has three chair lifts, three drag lifts and a conveyor belt. The owner of the Jennerbahn is Berchtesgadener Bergbahn AG (BBAG).
A one-way trip to/from the mountain station takes around 20 minutes.
A combination ticket is recommended; it combines a tour of the Berchtesgaden salt mine with a cable car ride on the Jennerbahn up to the Jenner mountain station, at 1,874 meters.

You can see the Königssee, but only so good because of the vegetation. Nonetheless, the view of the mountains is good.

A picture-perfect day: Up on the Jennerbahn cable car, a snack at the Carl von Stahl Haus, then on to the idyllic Königsbachalm, then down to the lake via the Reitsteig trail. The crowning finale: the return trip by boat across Lake Königssee.

A perfect day of hiking on Lake Königssee! 🌞
