The originally Gothic castle, converted into a palace, had fallen into ruin in the decades after the Second World War. After the end of Czechoslovakia, crucial steps were taken for its preservation. A private investor intends to use it as a hotel. Initial repairs, such as a complete roof repair, the installation of windows, and exterior facade restoration, halted the advanced decay. Meanwhile, excavations in the basement have provided new insights into the first castle complex at this site. It was built in the mid-13th century. In 1264, it is documented in connection with Ruprecht von Nový Liebenstein. The Liebenstein family died out at the end of the 13th century, and the castle was demolished. In 1346, František Gosswein from Eger acquired the estate and the destroyed castle as a Bohemian crown fief and had it rebuilt in 1355 with the permission of Charles IV. After several changes of ownership, the castle came into the possession of the von Zedtwitz family in 1425, to whom it belonged until 1945. The von Zedtwitz family had repaired the original castle in 1719 after its destruction in the Thirty Years' War and converted it into a Rococo palace around 1770.

Seeberg Castle

The history of Seeberg (Czech: Ostroh) dates back to the Bronze Age. Seeberg Castle was built around the year 1200 as the seat of one of the ministers from Eger on the site of a much older hillfort. The castle was first mentioned in writing in 1322 as part of the property that Ludwig IV of Bavaria pawned to King John of Luxembourg. Over the centuries, it had numerous owners and experienced devastating events, including the Swedish conquest in 1648 during the Thirty Years' War. Since 1990, the castle has been accessible to the public after reconstruction by the City Museum in Františkovy Lázně in the 1970s. Guided tours through exhibitions on various topics are offered. The divided castle sits enthroned on a rocky outcrop above the Slatinný stream. The forecourt is built with half-timbered houses from the 18th century. In the castle core, a Romanesque wall with a gate is partially preserved.

Cheb Market Square (King George of Poděbrady Square)

The Cheb market square has been the center of city life for hundreds of years. It is called “King George of Poděbrad Square” (Náměsti Krále Jiřího z Poděbrad). This king, who ruled from 1458 to 1471, is little known, but was actually a visionary of European unification and of far greater importance to the city than the famous Duke Albrecht of Wallenstein, who was murdered in a house on this site in 1634. For George from Poděbrady, Eger was probably the most important city in Bohemia after Prague; he resided at Eger Castle four times. In 1462, the king drew up the first European peace plan: the continent was to be united with a confederation of states. In 1960 a monument was erected to him here at the “Scharfen Eck” at the tourist information center. The real landmark of the market square, whose structure dates back to the 13th century, is a group of houses whose core dates back to the late Gothic period, the Cheb Stöckl (Špalíček).
