Gaubahn Cycle Path

Highlight • Cycleway

The Gaubahn once connected the Taubertal with the Maintal. Today there is a beautiful bike path on the former railway line. Simply wonderful for cycling.

Although it was almost all uphill for us, our salvation was to ride well on a tour lasting several days.

Ochsenfurt Clock Tower and Medieval Alleys

Highlight • Historical Site

A special feature of Ochsenfurt is that the city has two town halls within its walls, which were built in quick succession. The New Town Hall has always been used for administration, the "Old Town Hall" served as the seat of the court, as a department store and as a warehouse.

If you stand at the old town hall and look up, you can still see the remains of the Ochsenfurt pillory.
From 1948 the "Municipal People's Library" was opened in a room in the New Town Hall. At the time, no one had any idea how this would develop. After a year, one could already count 325 volumes and a readership of 70 people. The number of readers and the holdings quickly increased, so that the library moved to Hauptstrasse 39.

In 1982 the move to the old town hall took place, where today there are around 22,000 media and 1650 active readers.
The premises also house the special exhibitions on the silhouettes of Irmingard von Freyberg, as well as the Knittel photo exhibition.

Old Main Bridge, Ochsenfurt

Highlight • Bridge

The Alte Mainbrücke connects the Maintal-Radweg, at the level of Kleinochsenfurt, with the city of Ochsenfurt (komoot.de/highlight/100257).

The building, which dates back to the Middle Ages, is one of Germany's most important bridges from this period and was extensively renovated between 2010 and 2012. In doing so, one has been able to preserve a large part of the historical structure - and thus also the charm of the main spanning construct.

The mehrbogige stone bridge is for cars only in the city passable. Pedestrians and cyclists, protected by a high curb and on new road surface, can stroll relaxed over the structure in both directions.

The Gaubahn cycle path is a cycle path in Tauberfranken that is around 37 kilometers long. Around 26 kilometers of this runs along the route of the former Gaubahn. It connects the Main cycle path near Ochsenfurt with the Taubertal cycle path near Bieberehren.

History

Between 1907 and 1992, until it was closed, the Gaubahn connected the Tauber and Main valleys.[1] On May 3, 1992, the last passenger train ran on the railway line. In 1994, the dismantling of the tracks began, before the expansion of the cycle path began in 1996. Between 2010 (Acholshausen - Baldersheim) and 2011 (Ochsenfurt - Acholshausen and Baldersheim - Bieberehren), the former track bed was asphalted.

Route profile and characteristics

The Gaubahn cycle path runs on the disused Gaubahn route from Ochsenfurt in the Main valley to Röttingen in the Tauber valley without any major gradients. The cycle path is asphalted along the entire route and is easy to ride on.
