Fortified church in Einhausen

Highlight • Historical Site

The Einhausen fortified church is well worth seeing. The tower and its top are made of brick, which is rather unusual in Germany. A gate building gives access to the church and cemetery.

A beautiful historic bridge with an old chapel spans the Werra River here in Obermaßfeld. A new bridge is currently being built right next to it. Will it be visually appealing?

St. Michael's Church Obermaßfeld

Highlight • Religious Site

Only the sacristy and the ground floor of the church tower remain from the first church. In the years 1600 to 1612, today's hall church with the choir tower and the sacristy was built on it in the north-east corner. The spire of the tower consists of two hoods connected to an open lantern. The sound arcades of the tower are designed as late Gothic tracery windows. Three hard cast iron bells, which were cast by Schilling & Lattermann in 1920, hang in the belfry. On a corner stone of the tower there is a bearded gaff head, which represents the master builder of the church. The interior of the church, completed in 1630, was altered in 1784. A two-story gallery was added to the north wall and another one was built above the chancel, on which the organ stands. In 1912 the interior was extensively renovated. The organ loft was moved to the opposite west side, allowing the Gothic architecture of the choir to come into its own. The current organ, donated by Duke George II, also dates from this period. The baroque altar in the form of a sarcophagus from 1692 comes from the castle church in Meiningen. The ornaments of the galleries, the pulpit and the ceiling are in the Rococo style.
