Like no other German building, the Offenburg Salmen embodies the striving for democratic freedom and the destruction of these values by National Socialism. Built around 1787, the former Salmen inn had a turbulent and varied history from the outset. In 1847, the Baden democrat Friedrich Hecker and the "Determined Friends of the Constitution" proclaimed the first democratic draft constitution in Germany here.
In 1875, the building became the property of the Jewish Community of Offenburg. For almost 60 years, they used the hall as a synagogue. During the so-called "Reich Pogrom Night" of November 9/10, 1938, the house of prayer was devastated by local National Socialists.
After the Second World War, the building and its history fell into oblivion and it served as a warehouse. In 1997, the city acquired the Salmen. After an initial renovation and expansion in 2002 and a redesign in 2022, the building is now a modern museum and a place of culture and remembrance. Due to its significance for German democratic history, the Salmen is designated as a cultural monument of national importance.
