Striegel House, Oderteich

Highlight • Monument

The intention to use particularly durable material for the Oderteich is best demonstrated by the harrow system. A shaft with a cross-section of about 1.10 × 1.20 meters was built into the dam at the deepest point in the valley. This shaft is lined with large hewn granite stones and reaches the natural valley floor. From the bottom of the shaft, an incoming channel 0.75 meters wide and 0.90 meters high leads into the storage space. As a result, the storage space of the pond always communicates with the water level in the shaft. From the bottom of the shaft, two wooden gullies made of oak with square cross-sections of about 25 × 25 centimeters lead to the air-side dam foot. They have an inlet from above at the bottom of the shaft, which is closed by a curry comb similar to a bathtub plug. This pin can be pulled or lowered from the harrow house above the shaft via a linkage. The oak drain is installed in such a way that it is always under water, even when the bottom outlet is closed, and therefore hardly rots. The entire bottom outlet construction is called a harrow.

Oderteich

Highlight • Lake

The Oderteich is a beautiful body of water in the Harz National Park. A path leads you around the pond. You can take wonderful photos from the dam. The Brocken bypass of the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg leads along here. Of course, the Harz Hiking Needle also has a stamp at the Oderteich. Include the pond in a hike over the Rehberger Graben or in the direction of the Torfhaus.

Directly near the dam there is a free parking lot on the Harzhochstrasse.

The Oderteich was built between 1715 and 1722. Together with the Rehberger Graben, it once supplied the Sankt Andreasberg mines with water, so that even when it was dry there was always enough water available for the operation of the so-called "arts". Today, the Oderteich is part of the Upper Harz Water Management UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its water is still used to generate electricity for Sankt Andreasberg. In addition to the circular hiking trail, there is also the opportunity to swim in the designated areas on the east and west banks.

Over time, a valuable flora and fauna has settled on the banks of the Oderteich. It is an important habitat for birds such as the gray wagtail, and the common sandpiper can sometimes be found here. Out of respect for nature, please stay on the marked paths.
