Mystery Grotto and Eichelgarten Ponor

Highlight • Cave

The strange name of this grotto goes back to the legend of the occasional appearance of the "white woman". This legendary figure hides the historically transmitted person of the attractive Countess Kunigunde von Leuchtenburg from Orlamünd, who lived in the 13th century at the foot of the Plassenburg. She murdered her two children on the assumption that the babies would stand in the way of her remarriage to the Nuremberg burgrave Albrecht the Beautiful. Despite extensive penance in later, non-married days and the founding of a monastery, which she presided over as abbess, her restless spirit has also been around in the mystery grotto since her death. An apparent verification of this legend took place among the local population as a result of the blood splatters still visible on the cave walls in the middle of the last century, which, however, may be traced back to black slaughter in the final phase of the last world war. The grotto is part of the karst hiking trail.

It is a small, natural opening in the rock through which water flows into the underground cave system. The name "swallow hole" comes from the idea that this is where the water is "swallowed".
The area around the swallow hole is part of a hiking trail and visitors can watch the water disappear into the hole. However, access to the cave system is not permitted for safety reasons.

Mystery Grotto

Highlight • Cave

In winter, beautiful ice formations can be admired here, also inside. The strange name of the cave can be traced back to a legend. There is an information board in front of the entrance.

Maximilian's Grotto

Highlight • Cave

A tour of the largest stalactite cave in Germany is an experience. A stalactite six meters in diameter is the Hammer. A Bavarian king wanted to extract gold from the stalactites and had some stones knocked off. What is very good: You can take photos.

Weissingkuppe Rock Labyrinth

Highlight • Natural Monument

Very nice hike over the meandering path. After the stairs go up the rock right side. It is a so-called mushroom rock: The heavy boulder sits on a base of small circumference. Fascinating.

Stone city with the "Two Brothers"

Highlight • Natural Monument

This karst rock labyrinth is absolutely overwhelming. You can quickly understand how the name comes about when you stroll through the alleys, squares and streets that have been carved into the rock by water and wind over the centuries. Really recommended to everyone!

In the nearby stone city and also on the surrounding rock walls, the hiker may have admired one or two climbers. Climbing history was written in 1991 at this point in Krottenseer Forst, when Wolfgang Güllich (* 1960) first set out on a climbing route with the "Action Directe", which was the first in the world to be in difficulty 11 (UIAA XI).
For the first 10 years after the first ascent, only three of the world's best climbing climbers tried to repeat it on the route.
The rock looks a bit unspectacular at first glance. Climbing is at 1- or 2-finger holes and tiny bars in the 45 ° overhang. The tremendous inclination only becomes visible when you see it from the side.

Vogelherd Grotto

Highlight • Cave

The Vogelherdgrotte is an impressive karst cave near Krottensee. It consists of Franconian dolomite (Malm). The cave experiences heavy recreational use.

But you can also enjoy this place wonderfully if you are there at the right time. The visit is particularly worthwhile in the morning and then you can feel the special flair of the Vogelherd grotto. Despite the notoriety, it can be a powerful place of calm!
